The Ananda
Temple, built in the years of 1091-1105 is a
typical example
of a centric Myanmar temple composition.
The Ananda
Temple is one of the 11 biggest temple
structures in
Bagan, beside of the
Ananda Temple is a other huge
temple structure at
Bagan, the Dhammayangyi Temple built in 1165th. With
its stressed
geometric character and the somewhat sober
faades he stands behind the expressive
forms of the Ananda Temple. Beside of this
the Dhammayangyi Temple remained one of the
unfinished temples at Bagan.
The structural
center of the Ananda Temple is the massive
square center.
In every side of the square
center is a niche with a 12 m high Buddha
Statue
of the last four Buddha: Kakusanda in the
north, Konaganama at east,
Kassyapa at south
and Gautama at the west.
The Ananda
Temple has a significantly and very
expressive silhouette, which also ca be
seen from a far distance. Rising skyward in
a pyramid form like a sacred place
where God live. Being near to the Ananda
Temple the details of the decoration come
into effect.
The
construction of the temple structure
symbolizes the characteristic Buddhist
cosmology, the model of the world and
the universe plus the interface between
people and the gods. The Temples are
virtually built for eternity.
Characteristic are also the colors of the
Ananda Temple. Also in the architecture
of India, Cambodia, Java harmonizes the
color of natural stone and the polychrome
painting with the color of the environment -
nature and human. The color of the building,
as well as his silhouette, is in contrast to
the environment. |

The Ananda
Temple is also a vivid example for the
synthesis of Art and the complex ensemble of
the architecture.
At the base
of the Ananda temple and hidden in the
terraces are 1472 niches with glazed tiles
with terracotta relief's with scenes from
Jatakas. Very interesting are the 400
compositions on the upper terraces of the
Ananda |
|
Temple.
They
illustrate the ten last big Jatakas;
each of them has 40 relief with
text in the ancient Mon language
dedicated. At the verandas at the
bottom of the pyramid superstructure
are 537 tiles with Jatakas and
inscriptions in Pali.
The
base of the Ananda temple is
adorned with tiles depicting the two
main events in which the Buddha
received enlightenment. There are
also inscriptions in the old
Mon-language.
On
the west side of the Ananda Temple
is the army of the evil Damon Mara
presented, threatening the Buddha.
On the east the bodhisattvas praise
to God after his victory over Mara.
The
inscriptions under the compositions
contain the names of the measures
outlined persons and the names of
the depicted objects.
The
Burmese or Myanmar temples were
called "Gu", which means
cave or temple cave. This name
corresponds to the nature of the
temple interior, which is a strictly
organized system of alleys and
niches: there prevail, the dominant
calmness and tranquility should help
to reach the desired state of
self-contemplation and inner peace.
