Myanmar silk material is mainly used to make Cheit longyis, special garments worn by both men and women. But a silk dress is only used for special occasions, other material for fashion and every day clothing are the usual cotton and other fibers, Chinese made have a huge market share.

This are not as soft as Chinese silk, they are even a bit harder than Thai product but what is missing is larger scale manufacturing as its done elsewhere. Some tailor shops also show beautiful silk scarfs.The weaver are located around Mandalay and some other places in the country. Design is rather conservative as it is clearly shown at the pictures below. The model worn by men is called pasoe which is a sarong-like attire and the model worn by women is called htamein which is like a skirt, both can have a distinctive wave pattern.

Cheit longyis have been in fashion and popular with royalty and commoners for many centuries. It takes great skill to weave these fabrics with their varied colors and intricate designs. Weaving targets are always to form traditional designs with a distinctive and elegant pattern, this can only be done by hand.

The top quality cheit longyi is called a product of 100 shuttles because that number of small shuttles must be used in the painstaking process of weaving each piece. read moreSkeins of thread are boiled in water and then washed clear of starch in cold one. Once the fibers have reached the desired soft and delicate texture it is dyed and readied for the loom. The young women weavers must have great skill; even three years of training may not be sufficient for a to become a proficient artisan.

A single cheit longyi takes 180 times longer to weave than an ordinary. The weavers working together can complete only four centimeters of fabric per day and it takes almost one month to finish a single longyi of this type.

The main center of production is in Amarapura, close to Mandalay. The most prominent companies doing this are Shwe Sintaing and Theingi Shwe Wah.
