Dawei or Tavoy the capital of
Tanintharyi
Division is situated on the east bank of the Dawei River, 384
kilometers by air from Yangon. Tanintharyi Division is the southern — most
administrative region in the country adjacent to Mon State to the north and
Thailand to the east.
Tanintharyi Division occupies a long narrow coastal plain bounded by the
Andaman Sea in the west and the Tanintharyi Yomas in the
east which runs to Kaw Thaung, the most southerly point of Myanmar and which then continues to
the Malaya Peninsula.
The
Andaman Sea around Dawai - Tavoy is
dotted with hundreds of islands including the Heinze group,
the Maung-magan group and
the Myeik or Mergui Archipelago which comprises more than 800 beautiful and
attractive islands. Some of the more familiar ones are the Mali, Thahtay
Kyun, Salon Kyun, Lampi, Pale, Letsutaw, Carrie, Zadetgalay, Zadetgyi, Owen
and Katharine Islands.
Dawei or Tavoy is connected to Maung-magan,
a popular seaside beach resort,
by the 880 meter Kamyawkin Bridge which has shortened the distance to Yangon
by 152 km.
Mining is an important economic activity in Tanintharyi with some 67% of
Myanmar’s production of tin and tungsten mined in the Division. Important
mines are Heinda, Harmyingyi, Yawa, Nanthida, Yadanabon, Kyauknitaung and
Kanbauk. Diamond exploration work has increased in various townships of the
Division and holds promise. |

Ships berth at Maung-magan and
passengers can cross and
travel by land to Dawei or Tavoy thus avoiding the extra sea voyage around
the Shin Maw Peninsula.
Tanintharyi has a tropical, monsoon climate with a
total annual rainfall exceeding that of the rest of the country and average
summer and winter temperatures of 29°C and 25°C respectively. Dawei - Tavoy
is a secondary seaport handling exports of tin, tungsten, rice, rubber,
timber, charcoal and dried areca nuts.
The first gas pipeline from the offshore Yadana Field passes nearby on the
way to Thailand.
Fruits such as those found in Mawlamyine, Mon State,
including durians, rambutans and mangos teens are more abundant in Dawai
or Tavoy Division. The most venerated pagodas in Dawai
or Tavoy are the Shin Motehti Pagoda, a
few miles south of the town, Shin Datweh Pagoda in the north and Shin Maw
Pagoda on the Dawei promontory. A 243-foot long reclining Buddha image
occupies the Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda. Natives of Dawei - Tavoy as well as
Myeik or Mergui people, speak the Bamar language with a peculiar accent of
its own.
In the 18th Century a group of Dawei - Tavoy people known as Inthas
or Sons of the Lake, migrated to
Inle Lake
to avoid the continual conflicts between the Myamar's and
Thais.
