Bagan Panorama

By Myat Thit and H Kraft

Available at Asia Books

This book is a visual feast, with a special subject – the ancient pagoda city of Bagan in central Burma.

Bagan, or Pukam as it is known to Thais, has inspired visitors for centuries and is regarded by Unesco as one of the archaeological treasures of the world. The city was founded in 107 AD, but it was not until King Anawrahta came to power in 1044 and converted to Buddhism in 1057 that the temple-building era began.

Now Bagan stands as a “skeleton of the glorious past”, the symbol of human endeavour and religious faith.

As the book reveals, these monuments are a mere reminder of the city’s former glory when the city was the Burmese capital between the 11th and 13th centuries. Although many of the temples are in ruins now due to centuries of neglect, natural disasters and looting, there are still an astonishing 2,217 temples and stupas still standing in an area of just 16 square kilometres.

Fortunately for the city, its remoteness and Burma’s political and economic isolation mean that Bagan has been immune from ugly cosmopolitan forces, and, as a result, there’s not a single shot in the book that depicts modernity – what you see instead are ox carts, thatched roofs and houses on stilts.

The photos on their own are enough to for you to be awed by the city’s wealth of culture and tradition, making you want to visit the city yourself.

A fine read
