-A Myanmar car might it be old, a little
rotten, with plenty of rust and broken shock
absorbers but is still going strong.
Sometimes on
Myanmar roads it is difficult to determine, do I see moving junk or are this still real cars,
this is especially true with with Taxis in
Yangon. Myanmar roads
are filled with rotten Japanese cars
which escaped the shredder in Japan, after
they are exported to Myanmar, litter the
roads of the country and poison the air.
Sometimes a
new Myanmar auto is visible but the junk
cars are the normality. There is a vehicle
which has lost half of the floor, there are
others which are just pulled together by
wires. In particular Myanmar taxis are
probably the most rotten in the world.
Remains from
the second world war are still visible now
mixed with old Japanese junk which can
hardly been called a car, coming together in
the traffic. The thing is the cars
from right after the WW 2 means US jeeps and
SUV are usually in better conditions as the
Japanese junk from maybe 2 or 3 decades ago,
its interesting to see mostly white Toyota
cars in Myanmar. Myanmar is
somehow a graveyard for Toyota vehicles
imported from Japan, there
are many and they are very cheap.
Someone told
me the other
day that
a lot of the
newer
Japanese
cars you can
see on the
road in
Myanmar are
actually
stolen in
Japan by
Japanese
gangs and
sold to
Myanmar for
a relatively
low price.
Since the
Myanmar
authorities
have no
possibility
to check the
car data at
import
its a good
deal for
some
Japanese
gangs |
|
A
other
very
common
situation
is
to
play
cars,
means
buy
a
Myanmar
auto
and
wait
until
there
are
some
changes
in
the
import
tax,
when
there
are
changes,
usually
the
tax
climbs,
the
sales
price
of a
car
already
in
the
country
also
climbs.
Import
taxes
on
cars
are
very
high.
Sometimes
the
people
use
a
legal
loophole
by
importing
a
used
car
for
taxi
purpose,
they
get
a
red
number
and
taxes
and
duties
are
very
low.
When
they
did
a
new
generation
upgrade
on
taxis
in
Singapore
some
times
ago
most
of
the
age
old
junk
from
Singapore
ended
up
in
Yangon
and
elsewhere
in
Myanmar. But
slowly

-By
the
end
of
the
last
century
a
new
trend
started
to
produce
the
cars
locally.
The
first
where
special
designed
Suzuki
car
with
a
big
cabin,
actually
this
cars
even
were
more
advanced
than
European
cars
at
that
time
in
terms
of
space
available
for
passengers.
After
this
a
very
new
auto
trend
broke
out,
car
body
parts
were
imported
from
Thailand
and
China.
Such
as
fixed
axels,
leaf
springs,
gear,
seats
and
other
parts
imported
(actually
smuggled
in
from
Thailand)
and
some
other
parts
plus
an
engine
from
China
and
there
was
a
new
Myanmar
car
rolling
out
from
the
manufacturing
facility
in
Shan
State.
This
half
genuine
car
comes
in
form
of a
WW 2
jeep.
Most
of
the
times
without
door,
only
with
some
textile
material
covering
the
sides,
just
as
the
famous
US
WW2
jeeps,
a
genuine
is
pictured
left.
Actually
even
today
there
are
plenty
of
WW 2
jeeps,
trucks
and
SUV's
on
the
road
of
Myanmar.
Just
have
a
look
to
this
romantic
SUV
above,
isn't
is
really
nice
?
No
yoke
I
really
think
this
old
Myanmar
cars
in
jeep
styles
have
a
certain
beauty
appeal,
I
guess
its
a
GMC.
The
fact
is
this,
WW 2
jeeps
are
much
more
durable
than
any
Toyota
pick
up
or
other
car
on
Myanmar
roads.
There
is
hardly
any
rust
or
broken
parts
in
the
jeep
and
this
now
after
around
eighty
years.
This
genuine
WW
2
army
jeeps
are
still
for
sale
in
Myanmar.
For
sale
are
also
other
Myanmar
cars
such
as
this
big
trucks
-
left
picture- also
originating
from
WW 2.
These
Myanmar 3 ton
trucks, a
Ford V8, a
Chevrolet
and a GMC
the
first two
remnants
from World
War II, the
third from
early
postwar
years, are
reminders of
a bygone
era. Almost
all the
original
parts have
been
replaced
except
perhaps the
engine, head
casing and
chassis, yet
these
vehicles
have
mellowed
like good
whisky and
are still
going
strong.
Suspensions
have been
reinforced
and like all
vehicles in
Myanmar,
the
specified
weight
load
is
grossly
exceeded. |

What
comes
into
your
mind
when
thinking
about
using
a
car
in
an
exotic
destination
such
as
Myanmar?
Its
car
rental
or
what
else?
The
suggestion
is
take
a
car
with
a
driver
to
get
around.
If
you
rent
a
car
in
Myanmar
the
result
will
be
almost
for
sure
disastrous
and
you
wont
find
a
budget
car
rent
anyway,
means
its
usually
also
more
economical
to
take
a
private
car
and
driver.
To
find
one
ask
someone
in
the
hotel
where
you
are
staying
almost
everyone
knows
someone
who
could
go
on a
ride
with
you
and
don’t
worry
they
go
where
you
want
and
the
hotels
everywhere
are
tuned
for
accommodation
for
a
driver,
its
up
to
the
driver
to
handle
this
you
pay
a
lump
sum,
the
price
for
car
and
driver
is
usually
about
$
50,-
to
60,-
per
day.

WW2
army
jeeps
are
still
hot
items
in
Myanmar.
Old
WW2
army
jeeps,
SUV's
and
trucks
for
sale
are
not
in
bad
condition,
they
make
some
noise
and
blow
black
smoke
but
they
don't
look
to
bad,
ok
it
need
some
positive
thinking.
There
are
also
still
WW 2
parts
and
all
kind
of
WW 2
car restoration
items
for
jeeps
and
trucks. Some
car
parts
are
still
used
on a
current
Myanmar
auto
but
now
the
car
parts
for
the
jeeps
are
mainly
coming
in
from
Thailand
and
China.
Aside
of
this
local
breed
cars,
its
Toyota
country.
Almost
80%
of
the
cars
on
Myanmar
roads
are
Toyotas,
interestingly
most
in
white
colors
and
practically
all
imported
as
second
hand
cars
into
Myanmar.
But
slowly
the
locally
made
jeeps
and
cars
from
China
gain
ground.
Actually
Chinese
cars
have
a
very
bad
reputation
most
of
them
work
about
half
year
after
you
can
throw
them
away,
unfortunately
the
Chinese
manufacturer
try
to
offload
the
junk
they
cant
sell
elsewhere
to
the
neighboring
countries,
the
Myanmar's
know
this
and
that's
the
reason
why
Chinese
cars
gain
market
share
only
very
slowly.
Some
time
ago
a
Myanmar
organization
purchased
about
500
trucks
from
China
and about
200
were
cannibalized
after
they
completely
broke
down
within
6
month.
That's
the
way
they
do
it
China,
I
guess
they
have
a
lot
to
learn
from
the
"decadent"
western
people. |

The
"home
made"
Myanmar
cars
are
probably
a
good
solution
for
the
Myanmar's,
they
are
simple,
strong
and
easy
to
maintain
just
the
right
stuff
for
a
tough
environ.
Imagine
a
BMW
or
Mercedes
who
brakes
down
here,
who
can
make
this
European
cars
fit
again,
it
needs
weeks
to
wait
for
spare
parts.
Even
in
Thailand
where
I
had
a
Honda CRV
SUV
fully
manufactured
in
Thailand
it
is
always
a
problem
to
get
spare
parts
from
Honda
in
Bangkok
it
usually
takes
several
days
until
even
simple
car
parts
arrive
in
the
province
from
Bangkok.
Now
if
such
car
part
things
are
already
difficult
in
neighboring
Thailand
imagine
what
would
happen
in
Myanmar,
unthinkable

Myanmar
Trucks
used
for
all
purpose |
Japanese
pick-up
trucks with
a 1 ton
payload
capacity are
popular for
passenger
transport
throughout
the country.
They are sturdy,
fast and reliable.
Equipped with wooden
benches on each side
and 5 stools in the
aisle, these
vehicles can seat 22
including the driver
and two cabin
passengers. Plus the
spare guy or
conductor and 3
passengers on the
running-board, the
weight of the people
alone is by far more than
the stipulated
payload.
This does
not include the
sometimes heavy
baggage on the roof
and extra passengers
seated on
top, a common
occurrence on out-of-town routes. A other version of
private traffic are
Mobility Scooters
and Electric
Wheelchairs

Anyway if there is not enough money under the
bed (no banks except the state bank survived the
last bank crash) take a bicycle rickshaw as a
substitution for a Myanmar auto
or a horse cart.
From an environment point of view Myanmar is
the dreamland of people such as Al Gore, with only
minor
air pollution outside the big cities such as Yangon
and Mandalay. Mr. Gore and all the other hypocrites of the
so called "green movement" would find their paradise
in Myanmar, here they could live a clean life
without air pollution (outside the big cities). No
need to worry about co2 emissions because of
electricity generation since there is no electricity
at most of the time. What a romantic life would this be for this
people ? They could light their candles in the
evening and pray for enlightenment.
I bet they would get converted to a normal
life very quick and praise the cars, the electricity
and never would come back to the simple life. But
people who get lots of money from the western
government, having not much real work aside of some
useless bla bla, are difficult to convince. Since
what is better as having a good life financed by
western taxpayers money.
-But however
you turn it a few treasures can be found in
the Myanmar used car market.

covered with some plastic. Plenty of
other cars that have escaped the jaws of the
Japanese salvage yard are around, real
classics are out there. Funny thing with
this Japanese cars is they are all
manufactured for left hand driving, but it
Myanmar the people don't drive at the wrong
side of the road, like Japanese, English and
Thai, among others, in Myanmar the drive at
the right side of the road. Actually in
Thailand they drive on both sides just as
the persons mood is. In Thailand many driver
have also a small TV set mounted at the
dashboard just behind the steering wheel.
Since many Thai people are very strong and
clever they watch TV or video with one eye
and use the other eye to watch the road,
this is no yoke.

old (the majority of
imported cars) probably have quite a
high mileage, suspensions and shock absorbers are usually worn
out, have a test drive and
see if it's soaking up the
bumps as it should.
A jarring car ride
mean the suspension and
shock absorbers have gone
south. Check the brakes of
this worn out Myanmar auto too, make sure they're still
stopping the car before the wall without
using too much pedal pressure. If you have
to stamp on it to make it stop, it means the
brake cable might be too loose or the brake
linings have worn out
Considering the imported car
has been around for a while, it'll be wise to
take a close look. Pop open the bonnet
and look for spills and leaks as that's
always a good indication of the overall care

car has received. Make sure you start up the engine of the
used car from cold (put your hand on the
hood to see if it is) as a hot engine will
sound very different from a cold one.
Ticking noises from the hydraulic tappets
are fine. Rev the engine to see if smoke
from the exhaust appears blue, it might mean
faulty oil stem seals. This can be
problematic and costly to repair.
Check both front and rear wheel arches
for signs of rust or repair and also open up
the boot to remove the lining to check for
rust. On the test drive, take notice if the
car feels unstable or nervous while taking a
mid to high speed corner. If it does, it
would mean that either the rear trailing arm
bushes or the rear shock mounts (maybe both)
needs replacing.
Are you keen on old really authentic
cars? A trip to Myanmar this is what you need. There
is probably no country on the globe where so many old
and rotten cars litter the road, in almost every taxi
you have to watch the feet do not fall through most
taxis are totally rusted.
There are other really ancient but very exotic cars
which date from the Second World War. The U.S. army
supplied a lot of jeeps, SUV's and trucks which were
thankfully accepted by the Myanmar, a new decoration was
applied, some paint was used and these great exotic
Myanmar cars are the result. These kinds of Myanmar cars
are still roam the streets of Yangon and elsewhere in
Myanmar.
These old, exotic cars usually about
70 years old but compared to a Toyota pick up, sedan
or SUV and other Japanese cars they still make a good
image. This are not restoration Myanmar cars, they were
just looked after orderly, they usually don’t have any
problems with steering, braking, or anything which needs
attention, its really amazing to see such cars after
long time period and in such a difficult environ and
climate.

somehow remind to the
cars of the 1950is which still today
move on the streets of Havana in
Cuba also the historic background
show some similarities.
-
Unfortunately there are so many old
carcasses of junk pieces
moving on the
roads of Myanmar, it’s really
amazing. Sometimes it gets dangerous
to others when brakes etc. won’t
work anymore. It’s also not so nice
when the old junk cars have a trail
of poisonous smoke behind them since
this if plain poison for other
people.
There are plenty
of old Myanmar cars around and
many wish to make them look like a
not so old car? It is somehow
possible, takes some effort and
time. It wont look exactly like a
new car but maybe still impressive.
Do some car grooming not only when
you want to sell car, making the car
looking nicer increases the chance
to get more money for, this is even
possible with a old Myanmar car.
Check first how is the paint and
tires, the car interior also needs
some renovation because it clearly
shows how the car owner cared about
his four wheeler. Use some silicon
spray to make the interior shiny
again and have it smelled just like
a new car.
But one thing
always amazes my with the
Myanmar drivers, I
went to Myanmar now since around 20
years and stay several month in
Myanmar every year but I never saw
one car accident, how come?
The other end of this amazing
situation is, I also stay several
month of the year in Thailand and
see a heavy accident at least 3
times per week there. Thailand has a
much higher car density but within
the big cities let’s say Bangkok and
Yangon there is relatively not much
difference in the density.
