CURRENCY AND EXCHANGE
Myanmar currency is Kyat (pronounced "Chat"). The official exchange rate is around 6 Kyat to US$ 1. The unofficial rate is
around 1500 Kyat to the dollar -June 07-. There are now several authorized moneychangers in Yangon who will change U.S. Dollars
and EURO into FECs (Foreign Exchange Certificates) and Kyat at market rate (subject to change without prior notice). We strongly recommend to bring along small denominations of U.S. Dollars in cash. Many hotels and restaurants require payment in U.S. Dollars or FEC, and FECs are also usually accepted in shops.
International credit cards and traveler cheques are not widely used. Myanmar does not accept any payments by credit card.
CUSTOMS AND FORMALITIES ON ARRIVAL
Regulations are generally relaxed for tourist travelers arriving by air in Yangon. Visitors should have completed immigration and customs declaration forms during the flight and must submit these on arrival. All foreign currency (in excess of US$ 2,000), traveler cheques, jewelry, cameras and other electronic items must be recorded on the customs form and may be checked on departure. No Myanmar currency may be imported or exported.
Duty free allowance is 200 cigarettes and one liter of wine or spirits. Note that export of antiques, Buddha images and gems without an official dealer's receipt, is strictly prohibited. Baggage may be X-rayed or inspected before departure.
It is not permitted to bring mobile phones into the country, even if they are not connectable to international networks such as GSM. They may be confiscated upon arrival at Yangon International Airport and released only upon departure.
air services have improved greatly over recent years, but public train, ferryboat and bus services are still generally unreliable and uncomfortable.
